Formed in Toronto in 2008, Heavy Weather is a group of musicians dedicated to re-invigorating the inspiring music of Joe Zawinul and Weather Report. It's not just their passionate recreations of recorded and live versions of the music but also their deep investigations into the intent of the composers that bring these musical treasures to life.
The recorded legacy of Weather Report represents one of the most significant bodies of work in post-1960s jazz.
--Stuart Nicholson, Jazz-Rock: A History, 1996
"Weather Report is less a collective of five men than a single instrument with 10 magisterial hands; a soaring sonic spaceship controlled by two far-from-automatic pilots, Zawinul and Wayne Shorter."
Leonard Feather

Very few musicians would undertake interpreting the daunting catalogue of Weather Report. Heavy Weather bring their collective brilliant musicianship
to the task, with a result that simply blows you away.

Heavy Weather is the next best thing to hearing Weather Report live in concert. The band consists of some of Canada's finest musicians , who capably and lovingly recreate the band's repertoire. Weather Report was a band of great virtuosos , and Heavy Weather handles the challenging music with the same high level of musicianship. Well done.

The musical domain that Heavy Weather
inhabits is dangerously substantial and groove-a-liciously impossible to resist. I love this band and you will too. They are stellar.
Steve Webster's bass mastery is inspired and effortless. Not to be missed!
Lorraine Segato - Toronto

Can we talk about precise, hard-driving world music?
Can we talk about some of Toronto's finest session players breaking a sweat?
Can we talk about excellent use of technology?
Can we talk about friendly, warm stage banter?
IF SO, then we are talking about 'Heavy Weather'.

Heavy Weather have got it down! From the early tracks through the famous years, they have faithfully recreated not only the notes, but also the sonic space, the interactive spirit and the energy of the original Weather Report ensembles.
Five of Toronto’s finest musicians playing some of the most memorable tunes in modern jazz history.
All they have NOT done is write the songs!
Henry Heillig - Music Director/Bassist - Manteca

The sounds that come from the stage are nothing short of inspirational, and their repertoire is comprised of complex arrangements that only the most intrepid players would dare to try. It's almost like those disclaimers you see in car commercials: "Professional Driver on Closed Course. Do Not Attempt"!
Listening to HEAVY WEATHER live reminded me of the pure joy that can happen when gifted musicians find that 'zone', with the end result being far greater than the simple sum of its parts.
And when it's over, you realize you have just witnessed some quite spectacular.

Heavy Weather rocks!
Not only are they true to the original arrangements of Weather Report's tunes- a difficult feat in itself- but they also open up and drive the solo areas to new and exciting heights every performance. Zawinul's use of synthesizers have been replicated with detail, the complex rhythms are effortlessly executed and the soulful melodies sing true to the heart.
The band is comprised of 1st call Toronto studio musicians, and it's very obvious that their labour of love has spawned an awesome tribute to one of the greatest bands ever.
Heavy Weather is a must see!
